Which used Porsche to buy, by generation

Eighteen generations of seven Porsches, scored on recalls against cars of the same age. The answer is not the newest one, and the cleanest record on the list is a trap.

Nobody decides they want a 2017 Macan. They decide they want a Macan, and then ask which ones are the good ones. That is a question about generations, and it is the one we could not answer until now.

Here are all eighteen Porsche generations on record, scored on recalls against cars of the same age.

The short answer

Buy a 981-generation Cayman or Boxster, and specifically a 2016. Avoid the current 911 and the Taycan: the 992 carries four times the recalls of a typical car its age and the Taycan five and a half times. The cleanest record on the whole list belongs to the 987, and you should not trust it — see below.

A ratio of 1.0 means as many recalls as a typical car of the same age. Lower is better.

Two generations are too new to judge and are left out: the electric Macan (2024–) and the 972 Panamera (2024–). Cars that age have barely had time to be recalled, and scoring them would say more about the calendar than the car.

What that says to buy

The 981 Cayman and Boxster, 2016. Half to two thirds the recalls of their age-peers, and in both cars 2016 is the cleanest year of the generation with a single recall — against 3 for the 2014 Boxster and 5 for the 2014 Cayman. That is the last-year-of-generation pattern doing exactly what it is supposed to do: the problems have been found and most of them fixed.

If you want the SUV, a 2022 or 2023 Macan. The 95B generation runs at exactly its age-peers’ rate over nine model years, but it improved sharply as it went: seven recalls in 2015 and again in 2017, then one in 2021 and none at all in 2022 or 2023.

The cleanest record on the list is a trap

The 987 Cayman and Boxster score 0.00. Zero recalls across six and eight model years. On this measure they are the best used Porsches you can buy, by a distance.

Do not read it that way. A recall counts what the manufacturer conceded. The 987’s intermediate shaft bearing is the most discussed failure in modern Porsche ownership, it destroys engines, and Porsche never recalled it — so it appears in these numbers exactly nowhere. The 981 that follows dropped the design entirely.

That is not a flaw in the data so much as the edge of it. A recall is the firmest evidence available about a car precisely because someone had to sign it, and the same signature is what a manufacturer can decline to give. Where a generation scores 0.00, you are looking at the absence of a concession, which is not the same thing as the absence of a defect.

(The IMS is not in our data. It is here because leaving it out would make the 0.00 misleading, and the point of the number is to be useful.)

The 992 has carried eight recalls in each of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Its age-peers carry two. Its recalls are not engine failures — they cluster in visibility, back-over prevention and wheels, which is to say cameras, screens and the software around them. That is what has changed about the car.

The Taycan is worse still, at 5.5×, and its 2021 model year carries 21 recalls on its own. Braking and back-over prevention lead them.

Why recalls and not complaints

Comparing generations means comparing across a decade, and owner complaints accumulate for as long as a car exists — roughly 1.3× per year of age. Rank generations on complaint volume and the oldest one loses every time, whatever the cars are like. Complaint counts also track sales, and Porsche’s US volume roughly doubled over this period.

A recall is issued once, by the manufacturer, when they concede a defect. It does not care how many were sold or how many owners bothered to file.

Recalls are not perfectly age-proof — a 2024 car may still be recalled in 2028 — so each generation is scored against the median for model years of the same age, measured across all 634 nameplates on this site:

Recalls saturate fast. A twenty-year age gap is worth a factor of 1.5, not a factor of four, and that is what makes comparing generations possible at all.

One thing that fell out of doing this

With 331 generations scored across the site, a pattern shows up that we could not see before.

How often a generation's first model year is its worst The first model year is the worst year of its generation 50% of the time. A generation averages 6.7 model years, so if the first year were no different from any other, it would be the worst one about 17% of the time. It is the worst one 50% of the time — a lift of 2.9×.

On Porsche specifically it happens in 9 of 18 generations: the 2017 718 Boxster and Cayman, the 2019 Cayenne, the 2020 911, the 2010 Panamera and the 2011 Cayenne among them. It is a tendency, not a law — the Taycan’s worst year is its second, not its first.

What we cannot tell you

There are no sales figures here. Recalls do not scale with volume, which is why this comparison uses them, but nothing on this page is a failure rate per car sold, because that data is not free.

Nor is a recall a verdict on how a car drives, how it holds value, or what it costs to own. It is one specific thing: how often this manufacturer has had to concede a defect in writing on this model year, against how often the average manufacturer did on cars the same age.

And the 987 caveat generalises. Every number here is a count of concessions. Where a generation looks spotless, that is where you should ask an independent specialist what the data cannot tell you.

Method

Seven Porsche nameplates from NHTSA recall records, 2005 to 2026. Generation boundaries are Porsche’s own type codes — 987, 981, 982, 997, 991, 992, 958, E3, 95B, 970, 971, J1 — not our judgement about when a car changed.

Every generation with at least three model years on record is scored; shorter ones get no verdict rather than a weak one. The age baseline is the median recall count per model year across all 634 nameplates on this site, recomputed whenever the dataset is.
