2011 Jeep Patriot
This year drew an ordinary 325 complaints for a Jeep Patriot — the model's median is 313. What they were about is the unusual part: 18.5% of them mention subframe, against 3.4% across the model's other years.
NHTSA opened a defect investigation into this model year.
| Complaints filed | 325 |
|---|---|
| Median for this model | 313 |
| Involving a crash | 20 |
| Involving a fire | 3 |
| Recalls | 4 |
| EPA combined | 24 mpg |
What the complaints were about
- subframe — 18.5% of this year's complaints, against 3.4% across the model's other years (5.4×). Owners wrote it as: subframe, rust, corrosion, unsafe drive.
- rusted — 12.9% of this year's complaints, against 2.4% across the model's other years (5.4×). Owners wrote it as: rusted, crossmember, rusted out, members.
- traveling — 8% of this year's complaints, against 2.6% across the model's other years (3.1×). Owners wrote it as: traveling, degree, traveling mph.
Words owners used for the same problem are counted together, so a fault written four different ways is measured once. Grouped by which complaints they appear in, not by a list anyone wrote in advance.
What owners wrote
Rear cross members and majority of the subframe rusted out, but this only was an issue 2 years after the extended warranty expired.
The is corrosion on frame and crossbars my jeep is rotting away, as 2nd owner with 85 thousand miles this shouldn’t be rusting away, dealer and jeep will do nothing as saying corrosion warranty and extended coverage x69 front rear crossmembers expired.

How this was worked out
Every year of the Jeep Patriot was compared against its own history rather than against other cars, which removes popularity and age from the answer — a common car draws more complaints at equal reliability, and an older one has had longer to accumulate them. A year is flagged when it drew at least 2.5× this model's median and at least 50 complaints.
This is a fault record, not a review. Nobody files a federal complaint to say the car was fine, so it shows what tends to go wrong — not whether owners liked it, and not whether it is a good car.
