2007 Jeep Patriot
This year drew an ordinary 270 complaints for a Jeep Patriot — the model's median is 325. What they were about is the unusual part: 29.3% of them mention fill, against 10% across the model's other years.
NHTSA opened a defect investigation into this model year.
| Complaints filed | 270 |

| Recalls | 0 |
| EPA combined | 23 mpg |
What the complaints were about
- fill — 29.3% of this year's complaints, against 10% across the model's other years (2.9×). Owners wrote it as: fill, station, gas station, every time.
- gas — 26.7% of this year's complaints, against 7.8% across the model's other years (3.4×).
- stalls — 27.4% of this year's complaints, against 10.5% across the model's other years (2.6×). Owners wrote it as: stalls, vehicle stalls, out traffic, stalls after.
Words owners used for the same problem are counted together, so a fault written four different ways is measured once. Grouped by which complaints they appear in, not by a list anyone wrote in advance.
What owners wrote
AFTER FILLING UP AT GAS STATION AND GETTING ON HIGHWAY ENGINE SHUTS OFF AFTER THE JEEP BUCKED SEVERAL TIMES. WHEN ENGINE SHUT OFF STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. HAD TO PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL URN KEY TO TURN ON ENGINE. ADDITIONALLY AFTER THAT,JEEP CONTINUALLY DIES IMMEDIAT…
EVERY SINGLE TIME I FILL UP THE TANK, IT RUNS A VERY SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE GAS STATION AND STARTS TO BUCK AND JOLT LIKE IT WANTS TO SHUT OFF. WHEN THE CAR STALLS OUT, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND THE BRAKES LOSE POWER. VERY DANGEROUS!

How this was worked out
Every year of the Jeep Patriot was compared against its own history rather than against other cars, which removes popularity and age from the answer — a common car draws more complaints at equal reliability, and an older one has had longer to accumulate them. A year is flagged when it drew at least 2.5× this model's median and at least 50 complaints.
This is a fault record, not a review. Nobody files a federal complaint to say the car was fine, so it shows what tends to go wrong — not whether owners liked it, and not whether it is a good car.
