Model years Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
This year drew an ordinary 345 complaints for a Hyundai Santa Fe Sport — the model's median is 160. What they were about is the unusual part: 9.6% of them mention quarts, against 2.5% across the model's other years.
NHTSA opened a defect investigation into this model year.

What the complaints were about
- quarts — 9.6% of this year's complaints, against 2.5% across the model's other years (3.9×). Owners wrote it as: quarts, spark.
- acceleration — 8.4% of this year's complaints, against 3% across the model's other years (2.8×). Owners wrote it as: acceleration, feels.
Words owners used for the same problem are counted together, so a fault written four different ways is measured once. Grouped by which complaints they appear in, not by a list anyone wrote in advance.
What owners wrote
My 2017 Santa Fe Sport is consuming about 1.5 quarts of oil every 2 days, and because of this, it's clogging up my fuel injectors, spark plugs, and exhaust manifold which I've all had to replace.
I BOUGHT MY CAR IN JULY OF 2016. SINCE THEN I HAD ISSUE WITH THE ACCELERATION. SOMETIMES CAR TAKES LONGER TO START FROM THE STOP POSITION AND WHEN IT STARTS, IT JUST [VIN]. ON OTHER OCCASIONS, THE CAR FEELS LIKE STALLING WHILE DRIVING AND THEN PICK UP THE SPEE…

How this was worked out
Every year of the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport was compared against its own history rather than against other cars, which removes popularity and age from the answer — a common car draws more complaints at equal reliability, and an older one has had longer to accumulate them. A year is flagged when it drew at least 2.5× this model's median and at least 50 complaints.
This is a fault record, not a review. Nobody files a federal complaint to say the car was fine, so it shows what tends to go wrong — not whether owners liked it, and not whether it is a good car.
