2016 Ford Flex
This year drew an ordinary 94 complaints for a Ford Flex — the model's median is 144. What they were about is the unusual part: 38.3% of them mention camera, against 6.2% across the model's other years.
NHTSA opened a defect investigation into this model year.
| Complaints filed | 94 |
|---|---|
| Median for this model | 144 |
| Involving a crash | 4 |
| Recalls | 3 |
| EPA combined | 18 mpg |
What the complaints were about
- camera — 38.3% of this year's complaints, against 6.2% across the model's other years (6.1×).
- reverse — 20.2% of this year's complaints, against 7.3% across the model's other years (2.8×). Owners wrote it as: reverse, clear, malfunctioning, appear.
- screen — 17% of this year's complaints, against 6.5% across the model's other years (2.6×). Owners wrote it as: screen, upside, upside down, black.
Words owners used for the same problem are counted together, so a fault written four different ways is measured once. Grouped by which complaints they appear in, not by a list anyone wrote in advance.
What owners wrote
Same issue as ever expanding recall for safety camera backing up. Blue screen, camera not available warning that does not go away while driving, black screen, upside down screen, distorted screen, and intermittantly operational and then not!
Rear camera is malfunctioning. When the vehicle is in reverse, the display shows either a flashing green screen followed by an error message or an upside down image with no parking aid lines.

How this was worked out
Every year of the Ford Flex was compared against its own history rather than against other cars, which removes popularity and age from the answer — a common car draws more complaints at equal reliability, and an older one has had longer to accumulate them. A year is flagged when it drew at least 2.5× this model's median and at least 50 complaints.
This is a fault record, not a review. Nobody files a federal complaint to say the car was fine, so it shows what tends to go wrong — not whether owners liked it, and not whether it is a good car.
